A curated residency program that provides artists an opportunity to dive into their own process on their own terms.
Shion Skye Carter & danielle Mackenzie Long
Artist Statement:
This residency will be an incubator for research of FAWN, a new performance created by Shion Skye Carter in collaboration with danielle Mackenzie Long. The artists will continue developing the movement language encapsulating feeling like a 'deer-in-headlights' amidst environmental and geopolitical collapse, mourning a future that's not quite gone yet. The choreography evokes wide-eyed, rickety creatures, buckling under their own weight while navigating a disintegrating world.
The Artists:
Shion Skye Carter (they/she) is a choreographer from Gifu, Japan, based in Vancouver, BC. Through a movement language of sensitive intensity and a choreographic practice of embodied calligraphy, Shion's work invokes memory as heirloom, dance as respite, and performance as imperfect artifact. They've performed across Canada, Berlin, and Paris, with ‘Cobalt’ shortlisted for the 2027 Bloom International Dance Prize (Sadler's Wells, London UK).

Theatre SKAM
Artist Statement:
As we embark on creating a sequel to A Waste of Stage Time, we hope to deepen our understanding and relationship to the waste-world we’ve created, and explore its relationality to the world of puppets. We’ll be writing songs about recycling and playing with metal cans.
The Artists:
Sadie Fox (They/She) [Ecopreneur of the Year, 2024 Ecostar Awards] is founder of The Sustainable Fox (a local consultation service specializing in waste reduction), comes from a professional theatre background, identifies as a professional waste gremlin or trash clown, and is passionate about creative solutions to waste.
Logan Swain (He/Him) is a Métis artist striving to make a difference in the world by telling stories that value truth and honesty while remaining playfully curious. An experienced sound designer and creator of new work, Logan is an MFA candidate at UVic studying Lighting & Set Design.
Leslie Ting
Artist Statement:
I will be spending time transforming 'practicing the violin' to 'the violin as a practice'. Continuing with sound and composition explorations and building on an emergent practice with dance artist and somatic practitioner, Amanda Acorn, I will be practicing intuition and sensing in the body to stay present with the violin.
The Artist:
I work with whatever tension is in my life at the moment. The audience is an important part of engaging with that tension. Often experimenting with my relationship with the violin to have a deeper relationship with the audience, I’ve worked across theatre, concert music, new media and public interactive installation.
