2025 ARTISTS-IN-RESIDENCE

Laurel Green + Milton Lim

Picture
Artist Statement:
Milton and Laurel will focus their residency time on the staging of nonsensical, conflicting, and incongruent games. Developing playframes for gameful dramaturgies, they will host a series of invited playtests to attempt to make sense of how and when we play games that don’t make sense.

How do you know when you’re playing? What happens when you bring the wrong game to the wrong party?

About:
Laurel Green (she/her) is a dramaturg, creative producer, and interdisciplinary collaborator of new performance work; from video games for the stage to participatory gardening installations, tabletop role-playing games for artsworkers, and burial rituals for deceased technology. Earning her research-creation Ph.D in Theatre and Performance at York University in Toronto, her work is supported by Connected Minds and Sensorium: Centre for Digital Arts and Technology.

Milton Lim (he/him) is a digital media artist, game designer, and performance creator based between Vancouver and Montréal. He is pursuing a PhD at Concordia University, focussing on the convergence of interactive technology, critical games, and the future of storytelling. He is affiliated with the videocan national archive, Hong Kong Exile, Theatre Conspiracy, and Moment Factory.

Plastic Orchid Factory

Picture
Artist Statement:
During this residency, we are looking forward to a week of dancing that aims to sharpen paths between memory and possibility, while clarifying the musical, and spatial vocabularies of our newest work
Catching Up To he Future of our Past unencumbered by the technical demands of the revolving stage and the media. Also, Victoria in the Fall is the best. We are looking forward to that as well.

About:
Plastic Orchid Factory is a Vancouver-based performance company led by James Gnam (he/him) and Natalie Lefebvre Gnam (she/her/elle) that creates work that dissolves the boundaries between dance, theatre, installation and digital media. For eighteen years, POF has prioritized supporting artists, building community and connecting audiences to experimental practices through residencies, mentorship, and the Left of PuSh platform.

Kyle + Marlys Loven

Picture
Artist Statement:
Having so far developed the work over Zoom, this workshop will be our first chance to explore staging possibilities including puppetry performed in the round and incorporating audience-made crafts into the puppet show. We’ll also be building a foundation of comfort in performing for Marlys who is not a trained performer.

About:
Kyle Loven (he/him) is a queer performance and visual artist whose work combines both constructed and found objects, unconventional storytelling, and various art forms with the human presence.

Marlys Loven (she/her) has over 30 years of crafting experience from a monthly craft group in rural Minnesota. They are currently developing a show that combines their individual forms of creating.
